This includes active and inactive satellites, debris, asteroids, and space weather. SSA keeps space activities safe and sustainable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In recent years, the need to track and understand the space environment has grown a lot for many reasons.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <span style=\"color: #c00000;\"><strong>proliferation of mega-constellations<\/strong><\/span> and the <span style=\"color: #c00000;\"><strong>explosion in the number of objects in orbit<\/strong><\/span>:\n<ul>\n<li>~16,000 satellites launched since Sputnik (1957) <a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> with 13,000 active<\/li>\n<li>With 3,664 launched in 2025, a growth of 23% from 2024 <a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The development of nano satellites, easier to launch and cheaper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>This has led to an exponential number of space debris <a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a>:\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Upper stages, engines, inactive satellites, explosion fragments, etc.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Collisions that happen between 7 and 16 km\/s, or 25,200 and 57,600 km\/h, create new debris. This is known as the <span style=\"color: #c00000;\"><strong>Kessler syndrome<\/strong><\/span>. In this scenario, the number of objects in Earth\u2019s orbit gets very high. When satellites collide, they create more debris.
