A wide range of observation systems, including Earth-orbiting satellites, atmospheric weather balloons, ships, ocean buoys and remote stations, makes the forecasts possible that people use every day and provide the foundation for early-warning systems. But meteorological observation is fundamental not only for public weather forecasts, but also for safety, resilience and decision-making across sectors. Observation is also central to innovation in aviation.<\/p>\n

\"Contrails<\/p>\n

Contrail avoidance with Thales and Amelia<\/h2>\n

On 19 March 2026, Amelia and Thales announced the successful large-scale deployment of their contrail-avoidance solution, initially launched in 2024 on Amelia flights between Paris and Valladolid. The approach optimizes flight plans by adjusting aircraft altitude rather than changing lateral trajectory, with the aim of avoiding persistent condensation trails while limiting additional fuel use. In 2025, the solution was deployed across all eligible Amelia flights.<\/p>\n

The value of observation for aviation\u2019s contrail-avoidance progress<\/h2>\n

According to the climate-impact estimation models used, the initiative avoided more than 2,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions during 2025 and reduced the average climate impact per flight by around 70%. Validation included spot checks using ground-based cameras with support from SII and Reuniwatt. This made it possible to establish a direct link between predicted contrail avoidance and the actual observation of contrails on Amelia flights and nearby flights. Building on these results, Amelia will continue deploying the solution in 2026, with the broader objective of supporting the integration of non-CO2 effects into aviation decarbonization strategies and future European regulatory requirements.<\/p>\n<\/div>
