Contrails observations to reduce climate impact
Contrails are the cloud-like formations created when aircraft exhaust mixes with cold high-altitude air. Recent studies suggest that their climate impact may be greater than that of carbon dioxide emissions from aviation, which has propelled contrails to the forefront of climate research, as the aviation industry seeks to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Understanding the formation, persistence, and climate effects of contrails is crucial for developing effective mitigation strategies.
Skycams for contrail detection and observation
The EUROCONTROL contrail observatory at their Innovation Hub is supporting contrails mitigation research. To enhance contrail observation capabilities, Reuniwatt’s innovative ground-based imaging systems have been deployed alongside satellite technology. This multi-faceted approach utilizes sky cameras operating in different spectrums to capture contrail data around the clock. The Sky Cam Vision™ operates in visible light during daylight hours, while the Sky InSight™ employs infrared technology for both day and night observations, helping researchers can create a more comprehensive picture of contrail formation, persistence, and movement patterns.
