Reuniwatt is pleased to announce its participation in the European Meteorological Society (EMS) Annual Meeting 2025, taking place from 7–12 September 2025 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The EMS Annual Meeting brings together experts from around the world to exchange insights on meteorology, climatology, and atmospheric sciences. Reuniwatt will be presenting a poster contribution focusing on the evaluation of ensemble prediction systems for solar irradiance forecasting in Germany.
Evaluation of ensemble prediction systems in terms of solar irradiance
Accurate solar irradiance forecasting is critical for optimizing solar energy production and improving the integration of renewable energy into power grids. In this context, Reuniwatt’s latest study evaluates the performance of different operational ensemble prediction systems to better understand their reliability in forecasting global horizontal irradiance (GHI). The study will be presented during the EMS Annual Meeting 2025:
Kurzrock F., Mähnert M., Mayer B., Gregor P., Voitus A., Schmutz N., Evaluation of ensemble prediction systems in terms of solar irradiance in Germany, EMS Annual Meeting 2025, Ljubljana, Slovenia, 7–12 September 2025, EMS2025-420, https://doi.org/10.5194/ems2025-420, 2025.
The research team compared six EPS models, including ICON-EUEPS, ICON-D2-EPS, IFS-ENS, GEFS, MOGREPS-G, and WRF-Solar-EPS. Using observational GHI data from 25 Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) sites, the evaluation focuses on forecast quality metrics such as rank histograms and the continuous ranked probability score. Preliminary results show that while all models deliver similar quality, our findings underline the need for post-processing methods and model calibration to improve forecast reliability in solar energy applications. We’re looking forward to discussing details with you during the event!
