Solar power production forecasts have become an essential tool for solar power producers and developers. As the adoption of solar energy continues to grow, accurate forecasting plays a crucial role in optimizing operations, maximizing revenue, and ensuring grid stability.

The Value of Backtests, or Historical Forecasts

One of the key applications of solar power production forecasting is the use of historical forecasts for revenue studies during the pre-commissioning phases of solar power projects. These studies aim to determine a power plant’s future revenues over its lifetime, providing valuable insights for project planning and investment decisions. Historical forecasts are particularly useful in the context of hybrid solar+storage power plants, where solar panels and energy storage systems are co-located, and managed by an Energy Management System (EMS). If grid-connected, these projects are often required to announce an injection profile to the grid operator, typically one day in advance.  Using backtests, developers can simulate the behavior of the power plant under various weather conditions and forecast different scenarios. This allows them to assess the quality of weather forecasts, optimize decisions taken by the EMS, and estimate the potential revenue using solar forecasts.
